Best Sleep Positions for Neck Pain Sufferers

There are two sleeping positions that are easiest on the neck – on your back or on your side.  Sleeping on your stomach, however, puts a tremendous amount of undue stress on the neck.  The spine is pushed towards its end range of motion for hours at a time, which stresses muscles, ligaments, joints, and even blood vessels and nerves.  Sleeping on your back or on your side with your head and neck properly supported can help you get a good night's sleep and wake up without pain or stiffness.

  

Upper Cervical Care for Neck Pain

 

Sometimes a simple change in sleeping position is not enough to provide lasting relief from chronic neck pain.  Upper cervical chiropractic is a niche within the greater chiropractic profession that places a high emphasis on ensuring the proper alignment of the top two vertebrae in the spine.  These two vertebrae, the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) are totally different from the rest of the spine.  They are responsible for bearing the weight of the head as well as the majority of its movement.  Because they are so freely movable, they are also prone to misaligning due to injury or simply wear and tear.
