Steps Towards Reducing Lower Back Pain


Low back pain is extremely common and becomes even more so the older we get. It's a big reason behind doctor or hospital visits, missed work, and disability. The best way to deal with back pain is to take steps towards avoiding it altogether.

  1. Get moving – Exercise can help maintain a healthy weight and can strengthen weak muscles (i.e. abdominal muscles) that can lead to lower back pain.

  2. Maintain good posture – Avoid slouching. If your work requires long periods of sitting, be sure that your chair height and desk set-up is ergonomically correct.

  3. Get proper sleep – Typically, a mattress that is firmer will give you better support. If you sleep on your side, placing a pillow between your knees can help with back and hip discomfort.

  4. Lift correctly – Bend at the hips and knees to keep your back straight, and lift objects close to your body, not with your arms outstretched.

Lower Back Pain and Your Spine

Your spine is made up of bones (vertebrae), discs, ligaments, and muscles to support and stabilize it. The tips mentioned above can help to keep all of these healthy and functioning properly. However, spinal misalignments from injury or day to day wear and tear can keep you from getting comfortable at night or feeling well enough to exercise.

In order to address lower back pain to achieve lasting relief, it is necessary to address it at its root. In many cases, lower back pain can be a result of a problem that originated elsewhere in the spine. As an Atlas Orthogonal chiropractor, I focus on the uppermost vertebra in the spine. Similar to a keystone in an arch, the atlas vertebra can impact how the entire spine is able to function.

When the atlas misaligns, the body compensates by altering posture, which can lead to unequal muscle spasm and tension. The pain can present in the lower back, but the problem itself lies elsewhere. By correcting the atlas, the root cause of the problem, the compensations can neutralize and the spine and supporting tissues can be given the opportunity to heal and strengthen.
